Where performance and simplicity are paramount but space is sparse, the Model One mono table radio fits the bill. With just three knobs, it is the antithesis of today’s ever more complex electronic products. But behind the Model One’s simple, innocent appearance, hides a multitude of technology facilitating higher sound reproduction and better reception over anything else near it in size or cost.
The furniture-grade, handmade wood cabinet is not just for appearance sake, but also doubles as an acoustically inert housing. A heavy-magnet, long-throw 3-inch driver is allied with a multi-stage frequency contouring circuit that adjusts the speaker’s output over half-octave increments. The result is musically accurate tonal balance and bass response.
Instead of a standard, off-the-shelf integrated circuit, the Model One uses a state of the art, discrete-component FM tuner featuring GaAs MES-FET mixers. Originally developed for cellular telephones, the Model One was the first radio to adopt this technology for better FM reception and increased clarity on closely spaced stations.
Discovering those stations is a joy thanks to the large analog tuning knob. Its geared-down 5:1 tuning ratio permits easy and accurate tuning. The amber tuning indicator lets you know when you’ve achieved proper tuning. Built-in AM and FM antennas provide satisfying reception, while a rear 75-ohm jack allows connection of an external FM antenna in difficult reception areas. Also provided is a headphone jack, auxiliary input to connect a portable CD player or other device, and a record output for recording, or to use the Model One as a high-quality outboard tuner.

Tivoli Audio was started by Tom DeVesto, a respected and established leader in the audio industry, with the goal of bringing simple to use, high-quality audio products to the consumer at reasonable prices. Says DeVesto, “the Model One table radio is so impressive, I started a company to sell it.” His thirty-year association with Henry Kloss includes senior management positions at Advent and Kloss Video and co-founding Cambridge SoundWorks. As the CEO and head of research and development at his former company, Tom was responsible for the development of many of today’s best-selling hi-fi and multimedia products.
Henry Kloss’ refusal to be constrained by budgets, deadlines, and trends has resulted in some of the best sounding audio products ever made. His long love affair with audio began back in the early 1950s when, as a student at M.I.T., he began building speaker enclosures for fellow students who wanted to exploit the sound of live FM broadcasts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
After co-founding Acoustic Research in 1952, he helped develop the first acoustic suspension loudspeaker, which forever changed the way audio was reproduced. Next came KLH and the Model Eight, the first highly sensitive FM table radio, now a highly sought-after collectible.
Ten years later at Advent, Henry brought to market one of the first projection televisions (which later earned him an Emmy Award), and one of the first consumer cassette decks with Dolby B noise reduction. Kloss Video entered the picture in 1977. In 1988, Henry co-founded Cambridge SoundWorks with long-time associate Tom DeVesto, offering factory direct savings in hi-fi and multimedia speakers.
In 2000, at the age of 70, Henry emerged from retirement to once again team-up with DeVesto to produce the critically acclaimed Model One table radio. His classic Tivoli Audio designs stand as a permanent testament to his passion for fine audio, simplicity, and value.
Almost since our inception, our customers have given us constant encouragement to develop a digital, all-in-one hi-fi system. Realizing the strong competition in this arena, we decided the best course was to take our time and do it right. We wanted to avoid the ubiquitous, awkward-looking, plastic designs that detract from handsome home environments. And we wanted to go beyond the conventional concept of the all-in-one system.
 
Our ambitious goal was to continue our tradition of outstanding sound quality, great reception, distinctive appearance, and useful features. The Music System embodies all of that and more. Features include a real wood cabinet, two audio inputs for MP3 players, TV’s etc, a slot-loading CD player and an alarm clock. The room-filling sound is produced by the built in stereo speakers and a down-firing subwoofer.
